Here are some great trailer maintenance tips. The last think you want during a rental is having a renter call you because of a maintenance issue you could have prevented.

  • Lubricate moving components: To avoid corrosion and maintain smooth functioning, moving parts like hinges and latches should be greased regularly. Use high temperature grease, not penetrating oil like WD40, it will remove grease, not lubricate. If you trailer doesn’t have sealed wheel bearings, ensure that you check the bearings regularly and repack them with high temp grease as needed.
  • Tires: Tires need to be properly inflated, before each rental. The correct PSI will be on the sidewall of the tire. Over or under inflation can shorten tire life. Check your tires for holes, punctures, tread wear and dry rot. Replace them as needed. Don’t forget to check the spare tire!
  • Brakes: If your trailer has brakes, you should test them often to make sure they are working correctly. You’ll need a brake controller in your vehicle, if your trailer has electric brakes. The brake controller should also be tested. Consider buying a wirleless brake controller you can rent out as an extra in your listing.
  • Lights: Before each rental, test your trailer’s brake, signal and running lights should be tested to make sure they are in good working order. Replace burned out bulbs and repair any broken wiring. Be sure to check your light connector to ensure there’s no corrosion.
  • Cleaning: Clean your trailer before each rental. It help ward off corrosion and rust. Clean the outside with a mild detergent and a soft brush, then clean the undercarriage of any dirt or debris.
  • Properly store the trailer: To preserve it from the weather when not in use, keep your trailer in a dry, covered space. If you keep the trailer outside to store it, think about covering it to keep the elements off of it.
  • Safety Chains: Consider replacing your safety chains with safety cables. They don’t get rusty and the look nice.

Follow these suggestions to ensure your trailer is safe, clean and ready for your next rental and to keep it in good shape for years to come.
