The myTrailer team is dedicated to your success! It’s in our best interest to ensure you have great reviews and repeat business. This is the first post in a series about being a successful trailer owner and getting the maximum income possible from your trailer.
Maintenance
Create a maintenance schedule for your trailer. A maintenance schedule will ensure that your trailer is in tip-top condition. We all know how annoying it can be when a bearing freezes or a tire wears thin while you’re on the road with your trailer. For a renter who may not be aware of trailer maintenance and who doesn’t have the proper tools, it can be a catastrophe. Your trailer manufacturer will likely have a maintenance schedule you can follow, and here is a generic one.
Check In/Check Out
When a vetted renter comes to pick up your trailer, take pictures of it and do the same when it’s returned. So you have a record of its condition in case something goes wrong. As the owner of the trailer, you should know the requirements to tow your trailer, from towing capacity to tongue weight to light and brake connectors. Take a few minutes to ensure that the renter’s vehicle meets the requirements. A renter isn’t likely to have the same experience as you with hooking up a trailer, and it’s in your best interest to ensure they know how to hook up correctly. It won’t take you much time, and it will help ensure a good experience. Doing these things is good customer service and decreases the chances of things going wrong. Make your you verify the renter’s driver’s license and that they have insurance.
Keep Your Time Commitments
When you list your trailer on myTrailer fill out the registration fully and consider what you can commit to. Don’t commit to rent out your trailer on a Wednesday if you can’t be available that day. If you ask a friend or spouse to fill in for you, ensure they know your trailer as well as you do and can handle Check out/Check In smoothly. If your renter is going to show up at 1:30 pm, be sure that you are ready by 1:15 pm. The same goes for when the trailer is being returned. Remember that your renter will be rating the experience and you want to get high ratings to show future renters you are an excellent owner to deal with. If something does come up, let your renter know as soon as possible.
Extras
If you have accessories or extras you can provide with your trailer that will add value to the rental and give the renter a better experience, list them with your trailer. It will save the renter time and money and put more money in your pocket. For instance, if your trailer needs a brake controller, consider purchasing a one-step install Bluetooth controller. They can be used with most modern vehicles.
Customer Service
Think back to a time when you rented a trailer from a big chain. How was the experience? With a small effort, you can delight your renters and get outstanding ratings. The better your ratings, the more rentals you are likely to get. Little things like ensuring your trailer is cleaned before check out, helping with hook up and giving towing tips will go a long way!
